History of McKendree church

The Rev. John Griffin and other circuit ministers held services several years before the little gathering met at Jared Smith's home in 1827, to worship according to their views and organize a Methodist - Episcopal Church. They were fifteen in number upon organization. The first public services were held at a schoolhouse. The first meeting house was constructed on the site of the present church at a cost of $2000.
In 1865, the present church was erected, at a cost of $10,000. Tradition states that Bishop McKendree dedicated the building and thus accounting for its name. A parsonage was built in 1873-74. In 1926, the Conference appointments united Germany Hill and McKendree as a charge. Many of these early members are remembered today- their names are still present in honor of the time and leadership they provided to create "our church." We have much to be thankful for those who have gone before us.
In 1976, eight Sunday School classrooms were added on the main church. Later the only Candor professional day care finished the basement of these classrooms in exchange for the use of this space. We are indebted to those faithful individuals who carry on today the present work of the charge. Hopefully, we will be responsible, faithful servants and pass on to others the means and place to worship God.  -From February 1993 newsletter.
